David Soren is an award-winning Director, Writer, Illustrator, and Story Artist whose work has captivated audiences worldwide. With a career spanning over two decades, he is best known for directing the animated feature films Turbo (2013) and Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie (2017), both of which showcase his unique blend of humor, heart, and visual innovation.
Early Life and Education
Born in Toronto, David's passion for animation ignited at a young age. Determined to pursue his dream, he enrolled in Sheridan College's esteemed animation program. His student short film, Mr. Lucky, garnered significant acclaim and was even accepted into competition for the 1997 Academy Awards.
Career in Animation
After graduating, David was recruited by DreamWorks Animation, where he contributed as a Story Artist on notable films such as Shrek, Chicken Run, and Over the Hedge. He later served as Head of Story on Shark Tale.
In 2009, David made his directorial debut with the holiday special Merry Madagascar, followed by Madly Madagascar in 2013.
His feature film directorial debut came with Turbo, a story he originated, which tells the tale of a garden snail who dreams of racing in the Indianapolis 500. The film was praised for its animation, cinematography, and voice performances.
David continued to showcase his directorial versatility with Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie, an adaptation of Dav Pilkey's beloved book series. The film was celebrated for capturing the spirit of the source material while adding an inventive animation style and use of mixed media.
After 22 years at DreamWorks, David joined Paramount Animation, where he directed and co-wrote the original musical Under the Boardwalk (2023). In addition to DreamWorks and Paramount, he has also worked for Fox Animation, Blue Sky Studios, 21 Laps Entertainment, and Annapurna Animation.
